Arsenal sign Dutch teenager Demiane Agustien from Derby
Arsenal have completed the signing of highly rated Dutch midfielder Demiane Agustien from Derby County.
The 17-year-old has signed his first professional contract with the North London club.
Agustien decided against accepting a professional offer from Derby and instead opted to continue his development at Arsenal.
He becomes the latest youngster to join the club’s ranks as they continue to strengthen their youth setup.
The Dutch youth international had spent the last two seasons at Derby County, where he impressed at academy level.
He also featured in a match against Arsenal at Meadow Park in April, where he provided an assist.
Before joining Derby, Agustien was part of West Bromwich Albion’s academy.
He now brings valuable experience as he steps into Arsenal’s under-21 side for the upcoming season.
Agustien is known for his ability to play centrally as well as out wide, offering versatility and composure on the ball.
His arrival adds depth to the club’s midfield at development level.
Agustien motivated by Arsenal’s development focus
Agustien is the son of former Swansea City and Crystal Palace midfielder Kemy Agustien.
The young midfielder revealed that the opportunity to grow in a structured and professional environment influenced his move.
“I’m just very pleased, obviously playing for a big club. Can’t wait to get started and play for Arsenal,” Agustien told the club’s website.
“I think the way they’ve got the ex-pro footballers here as well, which is something big within the club.
“Obviously, you’ve got the likes of Per [Mertesacker], which I’ve obviously spoken to as well, and I know his values.
“They’re very high and he wants to create a better player, but also a better person, which is a great statement as well.”
Agustien has featured for Netherlands at under-18 level and is also eligible for Curaçao, where he has earned caps too. His dual nationality makes him one of the most exciting young players to follow in both countries.
He also mentioned his admiration for Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, who shares his Curaçaoan background.
“Obviously, I’ve known about him because he’s a Dutch player, but he’s also from Curaçao, a small Caribbean island, where I’m from and not many people from the Netherlands and from Curaçao live in the UK,” Agustien said.
“So therefore, it’s nice to obviously see him, train with him as well and see the levels of what brought him here and what got him here.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Agustien made his ambitions clear.
“I’ll just look to make a statement on why I think I’m good enough to be playing for Arsenal and really prove myself and eventually, hopefully, I can make some appearances with the first team hopefully or to be on a bench as well and gain experience. Would be amazing for this season.”
