Arsenal ‘keen’ on signing Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons
Arsenal are reportedly ‘keen’ on signing RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners have been very busy in this transfer window, strengthening the squad and attempting to close the gap with Liverpool. They have signed Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, and Noni Madueke by spending around £125m.
Moreover, Cristhian Mosquera is set to join from Valencia for a fee less than €20m, while the North London club have been working on a deal to buy Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.
It was reported a few days ago that Arsenal reached a basic agreement with the Lions to seal the deal for a fee of around £62m, including bonuses. However, the final agreement hasn’t been reached yet, and the forward hasn’t been permitted to travel to London to undergo medical.
He is desperate to move to the Emirates Stadium and has refused to return to pre-season training with Sporting. So, the Lions have taken legal action against him.
Furthermore, Arsenal want a new left winger and a CAM to support Martin Odegaard. It has come as a bit of a surprise that Mikel Arteta is looking for a new CAM, despite already having Ethan Nwaneri as a backup option.
Simons to Arsenal
On X, Romano says that Arsenal are ‘keen’ on signing Simons, but they haven’t been able to make a move for him yet as they have been busy finalising a deal for Gyokeres.
Moreover, after purchasing the Swedish international, Arsenal will look to sell players before attempting to add any new faces.
Chelsea are also interested in the Dutchman and have already managed to convince the player to move to Stamford Bridge. They will start negotiating with Leipzig over this deal today.
However, having already spent big this summer, Chelsea can’t afford to buy Simons without raising funds by selling stars, with Leipzig demanding less than £60m.
The 22-year-old is a CAM by nature but is also comfortable out wide. Arteta likes having versatile players, so perhaps the Spanish boss wants to buy Simons.
He is a talented player and possesses high potential, so he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service in this window. However, it appears the Blues are frontrunners in this race.
