Arsenal making ‘strong bid’ to sign Nico Williams
Arsenal are reportedly making a ‘strong bid’ to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Since becoming the Gunners’ boss back in 2019, Mikel Arteta has managed to make his club a title contender. However, he has been struggling to take the next step and make the North London club the English champions.
Arsenal finished second in the last three consecutive campaigns. After beating Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal last term, it was felt that they could become European champions. However, they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final, and the French giants eventually became the champions.
It feels like Arsenal’s attacking department have reached the limit and they need to upgrade this position to take the next step and finally become the Premier League champions.
Bukayo Saka is the undisputed starter on the right flank and is the talismanic figure, while Ethan Nwaneri is his backup. Therefore, the Gunners are well-resourced in this position.
However, they need a new striker and a left-sided forward. Arteta has seemingly identified the problems as well, so he is planning to bolster these two positions.
Williams to Arsenal
Fichajes state that Arsenal want Williams to bolster the left flank and have been monitoring his situation closely at San Mamés Stadium before making a potential swoop.
The Basque club have no intention of letting him leave unless his £50m release clause is triggered by his potential suitors, such as the Gunners.
Williams is open to taking the next step in his career, and Arsenal are making a ‘strong bid’ to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Williams enjoyed a stellar campaign in the 2023/24 season and helped the Lions win the Copa del Rey. Moreover, he played a key role in guiding Spain to become European Champions last summer.
The Spanish international couldn’t manage to replicate the same performance last season, still he helped his boyhood club qualify for the Champions League by finishing fourth in La Liga.
Williams is a highly talented player and would be a great coup for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service in this transfer window.
