Arsenal lead race ahead of Chelsea to sign Nico Williams
Arsenal are reportedly leading the race ahead of Chelsea to sign Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, as per Caught Offside.
Having endured yet another trophyless campaign this season, Mikel Arteta has insisted that they need to sign top talents to win big silverware like the Premier League and Champions League next season.
The Spanish boss is reportedly willing to hire a new striker and midfielder, moreover, he wants a wide forward following Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard’s average displays this season.
The Gunners hold a long-standing interest in Williams as they tried to purchase him ahead of this season but couldn’t manage to do the deal.
Now, Caught Offside claim that although Arsenal failed to sign him last year, they remain keen on hiring him. However, they aren’t the only club in this race, as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Chelsea are all plotting a swoop.
Arteta has already held direct talks with the player to present him the project, and following that, Arsenal are currently in a ‘commanding position’ to seal the deal by beating their rivals in this race.
Williams to Arsenal
The forward will enter the final two years of his current contract this summer and has a £50m release clause.
Williams has showcased his qualities with Athletic Club in recent years. He enjoyed a productive campaign last term and helped his side win the Copa del Rey trophy. Moreover, the youngster guided Spain to win the European Championship last summer.
The 22-year-old hasn’t been able to replicate last season’s goal contribution tally this term, still he has managed to help his side qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four in La Liga. The forward propelled the Basque club to reach the semi-final of the Europa League before losing to Manchester United.
The Spaniard is one of the most promising young forwards in the world and possesses the potential to reach the top. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they hire him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window.
