Arsenal ‘lining up’ a swoop to sign Christopher Nkunku
Arsenal are reportedly ‘lining up’ a swoop to sign Chelsea outcast Christopher Nkunku, as per The Sun.
After impressing with RB Leipzig, the Frenchman moved to Stamford Bridge ahead of last season. However, the forward sustained a serious knee issue during pre-season, as a result, he couldn’t serve his new club properly in his debut campaign.
The 27-year-old has also struggled with fitness problems this season and has been out over the last few weeks. But when he stayed fit, he failed to break into Enzo Maresca’s starting eleven.
Therefore, speculation surrounding his future has been emerging in recent months. Nkunku was heavily linked with a move away from the Blues in the winter window, but a move eventually didn’t come to fruition.
Now, The Sun claim that having become frustrated with a lack of playing time under Maresca, the forward is ‘pushing’ to leave and Arsenal are ‘lining up’ a swoop to sign him by taking advantage of his current situation.
Nkunku to Arsenal
Mikel Arteta believes Nkunku would be a good option to strengthen the frontline, but purchasing him won’t be straightforward as Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid are also interested in securing his service.
Following his struggling spell at Chelsea, Nkunku’s valuation has dropped and is valued at around £38m by Transfermarkt, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.
Nkunku is a versatile forward as he can play on the left flank and the centre-forward position. Moreover, he can provide cover in the CAM role if needed.
Arsenal previously tried to rejuvenate Kai Havertz’s career by hiring him following his underwhelming spell at Chelsea, but he can’t be considered a successful acquisition yet.
Therefore, considering that experience, signing Nkunku might not be the best decision, especially given his recent injury record. So, Arsenal would be better off exploring other options to strengthen the attacking department.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
Meanwhile, following a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League, Arsenal will conclude the season with a trip to St. Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton next weekend.
