Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is set to have ankle surgery before the start of the new season, according to Telegraph Sport.

The Dutch international has been playing through discomfort in recent weeks, and Arsenal’s medical team now believe an operation is necessary.

Timber has been a key part of Mikel Arteta’s squad this season, making 48 appearances in all competitions. He has featured in both full-back positions and has been praised for his consistency and versatility.

Signed from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for £38 million, Timber has quickly become an important player for the Gunners.

Despite some injury concerns this term, he has remained one of Arsenal’s most reliable performers.

The 23-year-old offers more than just defensive stability. He has scored twice and provided four assists in all competitions this season, showing his quality in attack as well.

Important role in Arsenal’s defence

Arsenal currently have the most clean sheets in the Premier League, with 13 in total. Timber has been central to this strong defensive record.

He has helped Arteta’s side remain solid at the back and has slotted into either flank when needed.

His positioning and decision-making have improved as the season progressed.

Timber’s second campaign in north London has been far better than his first, which was ruined by a serious knee injury.

This time around, he has been able to stay fit for long periods despite some minor issues.

However, the decision has now been made to deal with the ankle problem properly ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

The surgery is seen as a precaution to avoid further trouble when the new season begins.

It is not yet clear how long the recovery will take or whether the procedure will affect his availability for the opening games.

Arsenal will hope the defender makes a swift recovery and returns in top shape for another big year under Arteta.
