Arsenal increasingly ‘likely’ to sign Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal are reportedly increasingly ‘likely’ to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per The Sun.
The Gunners started this season with the ambition of finally winning big silverware, but unfortunately, they have to end the campaign empty-handed once again. Meaning, the North London club haven’t won a major competition since lifting the FA Cup in 2020.
They reached the semi-final of the Champions League and Carabao Cup this term, but couldn’t manage to overcome Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United’s challenges, respectively, while the Magpies have won the Carabao Cup.
Arsenal were Liverpool’s main competitor for the Premier League this campaign, but since the Reds won the league, Mikel Arteta’s side have been stuttering, accumulating two points in three games. As a result, they are at risk of losing second place.
Amid this situation, the Emirates club have started making moves in the market and are reportedly close to agreeing on a deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad to bolster the midfield department.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
Now, The Sun report that Arteta wants to wrap up the big-name signings before the pre-season to prepare well ahead of next season. The Spanish boss wants a new striker, and Gyokeres is on Arsenal’s wishlist.
They are increasingly ‘likely’ to hire him and are keen on sealing the deal for a fee between £60m-£70m. The 26-year-old is ready to take the next step in his career, while Sporting want a resolution about his future as quickly as possible.
Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in the last couple of seasons, and signing a player of his qualities for a relatively affordable price would be a great piece of business for Arsenal should they eventually manage to get the deal done.
Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are the two strikers Arsenal currently have, but neither has managed to showcase productivity in front of the goal. So, upgrading this area would be the right decision.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will face off against Newcastle United in the penultimate game of this Premier League campaign on Sunday before taking on Southampton on the final day next weekend.
