Arsenal plot swoop to sign Newcastle star Anthony Gordon
Arsenal are reportedly plotting a swoop to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon, as per transfer expert Mike Brown.
After moving to St James’ Park Stadium from Everton a couple of years ago, the 24-year-old has enjoyed a promising spell in recent years. In 48 appearances in all competitions, he scored 12 goals and registered 10 assists last season.
Following that, he was selected to play for the England national team in the European Championship. Although he didn’t play regularly under Gareth Southgate, the Three Lions reached the final before losing to Spain.
The forward has had a tepid campaign this season; still, he has been guiding his side to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top five in the Premier League. Moreover, he helped his side win the Carabao Cup this season.
Now, on Football Insider, Brown says that Arsenal want a new wide forward as a potential replacement for Gabriel Martinelli. Following the Brazilian’s average campaign this season, they are open to cashing-in on him if a suitable proposal arrives.
The Gunners are interested in Gordon after watching him closely in recent times and have been keeping a close eye on his situation at Newcastle.
Gordon to Arsenal
The Magpies’ finances have been restricted due to FFP rules, so they could be open to cashing-in on Gordon if they receive a lucrative proposal.
Brown said:
“Arsenal are looking to strengthen out wide. We’ve spoken about Martinelli, and if he leaves they want to bring somebody in who is better than him, and there are a few names on their radar. One player they’ve shown interest in is Anthony Gordon.
“They’ve been looking at him, keeping an eye on his situation in case he becomes available. Newcastle have a bit of uncertainty about them because of their financial situation. If they can offer a lot of money for him, Newcastle might have to accept.”
The forward, valued at around £55m by Transfermarkt, is a left winger by trait but can provide cover on the opposite side if needed. Moreover, Eddie Howe has used him in the centre-forward position as well at times.
Gordon is a talented player and has showcased his qualities in the Premier League in recent times. He isn’t a finished article yet and can become a top-class attacker in the future.
Therefore, he could be a great acquisition for the North London club if they eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window.
