Arsenal have seen their offer for Chelsea academy goalkeeper Freddy Bernal turned down, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The north London club submitted a £1.25 million proposal for the 16-year-old, who has already represented England at under-18 level.
However, Chelsea rejected the approach and have made it clear they have no intention of selling the young talent at this time.
Bernal has impressed with his development and performances for Chelsea’s youth sides. His displays have earned him international recognition and interest from top clubs.
The Blues remain convinced of his long-term potential and view him as a player capable of reaching the senior squad in future.
Bernal is seen as one of the most promising goalkeepers in the country at his age. This has led to growing interest from multiple sides across Europe.
Arsenal already have youth options in goal
Despite the rejection, it is uncertain whether Arsenal will try again with a higher bid in the coming weeks or months.
The teenager started five matches for Chelsea’s under-18s this season and joined up with the England under-18 team during the March break.
Arsenal already have two young goalkeepers developing in their youth system—Tommy Setford, who is 19, and Jack Porter, aged 16.
Porter has made swift progress through the club’s academy and even made the senior bench in two major competitions last September.
He was among the substitutes for the UEFA Champions League clash with Atalanta and the Premier League match against Manchester City.
Later that same month, he made his full debut in the Carabao Cup against Bolton Wanderers, impressing with a mature display.
Porter became the second youngest player in Arsenal history to start a senior match, aged just 16 years and 72 days.
Although Arsenal are keen on Bernal, they are not short of promising talent in that position and may take a measured approach.
Whether Chelsea’s stance changes remains to be seen, but the Gunners are clearly keeping a close eye on the teenager’s progress.
