Arsenal plot surprise swoop to sign Celtic ace Daizen Maeda

By on May 1, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Celtic forward Daizen Maeda, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

The 27-year-old initially joined the Scottish giants on a loan deal from Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos in January 2022 before signing permanently in the summer.

The forward has been enjoying a productive campaign at Celtic Park this season, scoring 20 goals and registering nine assists in all competitions. He has even scored four goals in the Champions League.

Maeda was excellent against Bayern Munich in both legs in the playoff round, netting in the first leg. He even played a key part in Celtic’s goal at Allianz Arena, unfortunately, the Scottish giants ended up on the losing side courtesy of Alphonso Davies’s late winner.

Now, reporting on TBR Football, Bailey says that the Japanese international’s eye-catching displays this season have attracted the attention of Arsenal, and they have been keeping a close eye on him before making a potential swoop.

Maeda to Arsenal

Celtic may accept a fee of around £25m to sell their star man, with his current contract set to run until 2027. However, the Gunners aren’t the only club interested in him as Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Brentford, Fulham, Crystal Palace, West Ham United, and Leeds United are also in this race.

Maeda is a hardworking left winger but is also comfortable in the centre-forward position. He doesn’t have a big physical stature, but he can be a nuisance to the opposition defenders due to his unrelenting pressing abilities.

Arsenal reportedly want to sign a new striker this summer and have been linked with a host of names ahead of the summer window, with Maeda being the latest name on that list.

He is a talented player and could add depth to Arsenal’s defence if they hire him, furthermore, he would be a way cheaper option than the other linked strikers.

However, Maeda hasn’t consistently proven his worth at the highest level to demonstrate that he would be the right option for Arsenal to strengthen the centre-forward position.

Therefore, they would be better off exploring other options. Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
