Arsenal have ‘chance’ to sign Newcastle ace Alexander Isak
Ex-defender Sol Campbell has said that Arsenal have a ‘chance’ to sign Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.
The Gunners are reportedly planning to upgrade their centre-forward department, which include Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. The German enjoyed a promising end to last campaign after starting slowly but was average this term before sustaining a season-ending injury.
On the other hand, Jesus has continued to struggle with fitness problems in recent years. After recovering from his injury, he started scoring goals consistently this term but has now picked up a season-ending knee issue.
Therefore, Mikel Arteta has been left without a specialist striker and Mikel Merino, who is a box-to-box midfielder by trait, has been playing as a makeshift No.9.
The Gunners have been linked with a plethora of strikers ahead of the upcoming summer window with Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen being among them.
However, Isak is said to be the primary target for Arteta. But, Newcastle reportedly don’t want to let their star man leave with his existing deal set to run until 2028.
Isak to Arsenal
Now, speaking on the Mirror, Campbell says that Arsenal have a chance to sign Isak but they will have to make a lucrative proposal to satisfy the Magpies’ demand.
When asked whether the North London club have a realistic opportunity to sign the striker, the ex-defender said:
“Yes, they have got a chance. First of all they need to get the right money to get Newcastle to start listening, then it will come down to the player.”
It has been reported that Newcastle don’t want to let their star man leave for anything less than £100m.
The Swedish international has been in tremendous form thus far this season, scoring 24 goals and registering five assists in 34 appearances in all competitions. He even helped his side win the Carabao Cup this campaign.
Isak is a Premier League proven player and should be able to hit the ground running straightaway. Therefore, he would be an ideal option for Arteta’s side to bolster the squad if they eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window.
Meanwhile, following a 2-1 victory over Fulham, Arsenal will face off against Everton in the Premier League this weekend before taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg next week.
