Arsenal lead race for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia as they aim to improve their squad.
Mikel Arteta wants to add a reliable deputy for David Raya ahead of next season.
Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper Neto is set to return to Bournemouth when his loan ends at the end of the season.
With the Gunners competing on multiple fronts next season, squad rotation will be crucial to maintaining quality across all competitions.
The Gunners see Garcia as the ideal backup to provide competition in the squad. Spanish newspaper AS (via Sport Witness) reports that Arsenal are pushing for his signing before the summer transfer window opens.
Arsenal were interested in Garcia last summer but chose to bring in Neto on loan instead. This time, they are intensifying their pursuit of the 23-year-old shot-stopper.
Garcia has impressed for Espanyol this season. He has made 27 appearances, conceding 39 goals, and is attracting interest from top clubs.
Competition for Garcia’s Signature
Several European clubs are monitoring Garcia. Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayer Leverkusen are all interested. However, AS claims Arsenal are ahead in the race to sign him.
His release clause is £20million but will rise to £25 million in the final 15 days of the window.
If Espanyol, currently struggling in 15th place, are relegated, the clause will drop to £12.5 million.
The Spanish club reportedly needs at least £12.5 million to balance their books.
Signing Garcia would strengthen Arsenal’s goalkeeping options. While Raya has been solid, adding a quality backup will provide depth and competition in the squad.
Manchester United are also in the market for a goalkeeper. They are looking to either replace Andre Onana or find a strong competitor for the inconsistent shot-stopper. A move for Garcia would be a smart decision for the Red Devils.
The Espanyol goalkeeper is expected to feature in their crucial match against Atletico Madrid as his team fights to avoid relegation.
