Arsenal Target Dortmund’s Schlotterbeck to Bolster Defence
Arsenal are gearing up for a hectic summer transfer window, with a new striker and defensive midfielder topping their wish list.
However, according to Bild, the Gunners may also be in the market for a centre-back, with Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck catching their eye.
The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most reliable defenders in the Bundesliga.
His current deal with Dortmund runs until June 2027, but the club is determined to secure his future.
Reports suggest they are prepared to double his annual salary of £4.2 million and may even offer him the captain’s armband next season, replacing Emre Can.
Despite their eagerness to keep him, Dortmund has yet to finalize a new deal with Schlotterbeck, drawing interest from several European clubs, including Arsenal with Bild claiming the Gunners are keen on the defender.
However, the Gunners face stiff competition as Liverpool and Newcastle United are also reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Arsenal’s Defensive Options
Arsenal already boast one of the most solid central defensive pairings in world football, with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes at the core.
Both players have been outstanding, and there are no indications that either could be leaving.
Even with Saliba and Gabriel in the starting lineup, Arsenal have plenty of depth at the back.
Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Takehiro Tassist can all play in the middle of defence so it’s difficult to understand why Arsenal would look to invest serious money on another centre-back.
Jakub Kiwior could be heading out, but his departure would not significantly impact the squad’s depth.
Schlotterbeck, valued at £34m (transfermarkt), is a commanding centre-back and reliable passer. He has a 90-per cent passing accuracy this season. He can also operate as a left-back, although Arsenal already have cover in that position with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori.
There is speculation Schlotterbeck’s agent is using the talk of his transfer to speed up contract negotiations with Dortmund.
Whether the defender truly wants a new challenge remains to be seen. However, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle are reportedly closely watching developments.
