Arsenal ‘the frontrunners’ to sign Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko
Arsenal are reportedly ‘the frontrunners’ to sign RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, as per transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.
After joining Die Roten Bullen from Red Bull Salzburg ahead of last season, the 21-year-old enjoyed a promising debut campaign in the German Bundesliga last term, scoring 14 goals and registering two assists in 17 league starts.
After being impressed by his displays, the Gunners registered a firm interest in signing him last summer. But, a deal eventually didn’t come to fruition and he opted to stay at Red Bull Arena by signing a fresh term.
The Slovenian has continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess this season as well, making 19 goal contributions in all competitions.
Now, it has been reported that the North London club are keen on finally signing a new striker next summer following Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz’s recent serious injuries.
Speaking on GiveMeSport, Jacobs says that Arsenal want to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United but purchasing him won’t be easy. So, they are still interested in Sesko and are ‘the frontrunners’ to secure his service if they opt to make a move for him next summer.
Sesko to Arsenal
Arsenal are also exploring free-agent options to bolster the centre-forward position immediately but there aren’t many options available who would be the perfect fit for them.
Jacobs said:
“I think if they do choose to formally proceed with Benjamin Sesko in the summer, we can term Arsenal as ‘the frontrunners’ at this stage, and then we know that Alexander Isak is the other big name on the list that Arsenal really like. But obviously, he’s a lot harder to get.
“At this stage, I think we’re probably looking at Arsenal being opportunistic in the free agent market but appreciating that there’s not a lot of profiles that are free transfers that are exactly the right fit.”
The forward has a contract until 2029 with Leipzig and the German side would be ready to accept a fee of around £58m for him but they are hoping to bag around £83m.
Arsenal need a new striker and Sesko would be an excellent acquisition with a view to the long-term future if they purchase him. However, the North London club would be better off signing a more experienced option to finally win the Premier League title next season.
