Arsenal eye move for Barcelona superstar Ronald Araujo
Arsenal are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo .
The 25-year-old Uruguayan defender has been one of Barcelona’s most reliable players in recent years. However, with contract talks between him and the Catalan club currently at a standstill, Arsenal are looking to take advantage of the situation and bring him to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners have endured a difficult start to their Premier League title campaign, trailing six points behind league leaders Liverpool. With the winter transfer window now open, Arsenal see an opportunity to bolster their defence by adding Araujo to their ranks, offering depth and competition for Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba.
Ronald Araujo to Arsenal
Mundo Deportivo reports that Arsenal are preparing a significant bid for the South American centre-back. Araujo’s contract with Barcelona expires in 2026, but talks over an extension have stalled. Valued at £46 million (transfermarkt) the defender’s future has been cast into doubt.
Araujo has faced injury struggles this season, spending seven months on the sidelines. His absence has seen him fall down the pecking order behind Pau Cubarsí and Íñigo Martínez, further fueling his reluctance to commit to a new deal with Barcelona.
However, as per the report, Arsenal are not the only club interested in the Uruguayan’s services. They will face stiff competition from European heavyweights such as Juventus and Manchester United, who are also monitoring the situation closely.
Injury Woes and Defensive Depth
Mikel Arteta’s side has had to deal with injuries this season, with key players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, and Ricardo Calafiori all spending time on the sidelines. These setbacks have hindered Arsenal’s ambitions of securing major silverware this season.
The North London club is keen to close the gap on Liverpool in the Premier League and make significant progress in the Champions League. To achieve these goals, Arsenal will need quality squad depth. Adding a player of Araujo’s caliber could be instrumental in their pursuit of success this season.
By securing the Uruguayan international, Arsenal would not only strengthen their defensive options but also send a strong message about their intent to compete at the highest level.
