Arsenal eye swoop to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui
Arsenal have reportedly registered their interest in signing Atalanta star Mateo Retegui, as per Caught Offside.
Having been impressed by the 25-year-old’s displays for Genoa last term, La Dea decided to sign the forward following Gianluca Scamacca’s season-ending serious knee injury.
Upon moving to Gewiss Stadium, the Italian has enjoyed a stellar start to this season, scoring 11 goals and registering three assists in 12 league appearances. Atalanta are currently second in Serie A just one point behind the league leaders Napoli.
Now, Caught Offside claims that Arsenal are planning to reinforce the attacking department and have identified Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres as the primary option. However, Retegui is also on Mikel Arteta’s wish-list and he is viewed as an alternative option in-case they fail to hire the Sweden international.
Atalanta have no intention of letting their star man leave but they would change their stance if they receive an offer of around £41m from his potential suitors such as the Gunners.
Retegui to Arsenal
After narrowly missing out on winning the Premier League title last term, Arsenal made a couple of new acquisitions in the summer to reinforce the squad and mount yet another title charge this term.
They even enjoyed a promising start to this campaign but after accumulating only two points from the last four games in the Premier League, Arteta’s side are currently fourth in the table with 19 points from 11 games, sitting nine points behind the league leaders Liverpool.
Scoring goals has been an issue for the North London club in recent times as they have netted only three goals in the last four Premier League fixtures.
Kai Havertz has been the first-choice striker for Arsenal but Gabriel Jesus has been struggling to showcase his best in recent times. Therefore, signing a new number nine would be the right decision.
Retegui has been in impressive form in the Italian top-flight but hasn’t scored in the Champions League yet in four appearances. He even missed a penalty – which was saved by David Raya – against Arsenal earlier this season.
Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to sign Retegui to strengthen the centre-forward position.
