Liverpool join Arsenal in race for ambitious Nico Williams
Arsenal are set to face fierce competition from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain in the battle to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams this summer, according to reports.
Williams has long excelled in the Spanish league, and interest in his services has continued to rise this season following another impressive campaign.
The 21-year-old has four goals and eight assists in 27 league appearances. He has improved his goal contributions from last season, when he had six goals and four assists in 36 appearances.
Williams has been strongly linked with a move this summer and the chances of leaving Athletic Bilbao increased after they lost 3-1 to Atletico Madrid at the weekend. That defeat was a hammer blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and Williams is now expected to depart in search of elite European football.
Arsenal target
Arsenal are among the clubs to be showing a keen interest in signing the winger. Charles Watts confirmed recently that Arsenal have a strong interest in Williams. On Caught Offside, he said:
“What I do know is that they have a long-standing interest in Pedro Neto, while Nico Williams is also understood to be high up on their list of potential targets.”
Mikel Arteta is on the look out for another winger to support Bukayo Saka over the coming years and it appears Williams is high on his wish list.
However, it looks like the Gunners will face stiff competition as Fichajes claims that Liverpool and PSG are also in the running to sign the Spanish international this summer.
The report says Williams has a £51m release clause in his contract at the San Mames stadium, so clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and PSG know what it will take to sign the winger.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Arsenal formalise their interest in Williams this summer but it appears some of Europe’s elite clubs are ready to battle it out over his signature if he does leave Bilbao.
