According to Douglas Luiz’s admissions on DAZN Portugal, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail, Arsenal may face a difficult battle in convincing him to join them in the summer.

Mikel Arteta is believed to be looking for another midfielder to complement Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in his engine room.

Over the last few months, some talented midfielders have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, with Douglas Luiz touted as one of Arsenal’s prime targets.

Luiz, formerly of Manchester City, is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s most consistent all-around midfielders. He has an impressive nine goals and five assists in 31 league appearances this season. Not long ago, the Mail gave Arsenal optimism in their attempts to sign the South American.

They highlighted Villa’s tricky position with FFP, which may mean they have to sell a key player such as Luiz in order to raise transfer funds. That gave Arsenal hope they could finally sign Luiz having had three bids rejected in 2022.

However, the player has played down suggestions he’ll leave this summer. Speaking to DAZN Portugal, the Brazilian midfielder indicated that he is happy being part of the Unai Emery-Villa project as he feels it’s the start of a ‘new chapter’.

“We’re all very happy with how this season is going, especially me, with all the history that the club is building and for my goals and assists, too,” Luiz responded while analysing on DAZN Portugal how this season has panned out and what we can expect from he and his teammates.

“Personally, I’m very happy with it all, and I think it’s just the start of a new chapter. As I always say, Aston Villa is a huge club, and we’re prepared to write a new chapter.

“Since Unai arrived, there was a huge boost in the group’s confidence. I think he brought confidence to the team because we always had a good group of players.

“The squad is pretty much the same; only one or two players were bought in, so I think his work was important for the history that we’re writing.”

Based on these statements, it is clear Arsenal may have a difficult road ahead of them if Luiz is their dream midfield target. They may not only have to pay £100 million or more for his transfer; they may also have a big task to persuade him to switch from Emery’s project to Arteta’s.
