Arsenal prioritising signing Viktor Gyokeres this summer
Arsenal have reportedly identified Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres as the ‘number one target’ to reinforce their frontline this summer, as per Football Transfers.
It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are set to prioritise signing a new prolific striker in the upcoming window to reinforce their attack and challenge on all fronts next season.
A few names have been mentioned as serious targets for the North London club with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen being among them. However, according to the report by Football Transfers, Arsenal want to sign a versatile attacker – who can seamlessly slot into anywhere across the frontline, but neither Toney nor Osimhen offers that flexibility. So, they have distanced themselves from signing either forward.
The report further claims that Mikel Arteta’s side have been keeping a close eye on Gyokeres’ performances in recent times and they feel the Swedish international possesses the necessary qualities to play in the Gunners boss’ system. So, they have earmarked the 25-year-old as the ‘number one target’ to reinforce the frontline.
Football Transfers states that Gyokeres has a £85m release clause included in his current contract and it remains to be seen whether Sporting accept a proposal lower than that should Arsenal opt to formalise their interest.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
After joining Sporting CP from Coventry City last summer, Gyokeres has enjoyed a stellar campaign at Jose Alvalade Stadium this season, scoring 28 goals and registering 11 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions. So, The 25-year-old is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe at the moment.
He is quick, strong, good in the air, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the efficiency of creating chances for fellow attackers, can finish off his chances, has an eye for scoring goals from distance and also likes to press the opposition backline high up the field.
Gyokeres is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he could be a shrewd signing for the North London club if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually opt to secure the striker’s signature in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce their attacking department.
