Arsenal have reportedly been showing an interest in signing Xavi Simons, as per the German outlet Sport Bild.

Paris Saint-Germain signed the 20-year-old back in 2019, however, the midfielder struggled to flourish in his career in Ligue 1 so the French giants decided to let the youngster leave the club and join PSV Eindhoven during the summer of 2022.

However, after being impressed by Simons’ displays at Philips Stadion last term, PSG opted to buy-back the Netherlands international last summer.

But, they couldn’t assure the midfielder regular playing time at Parc des Princes so the Dutchman opted to move away on loan to RB Leipzig to play regularly and develop his career.

Upon moving to Red Bull Arena, the 20-year-old has enjoyed a promising season for Leipzig this term, scoring six goals and registering nine assists in 26 appearances in all competitions.

While citing and translating the print version of Sport Bild, Sport Witness has reported that having been impressed by Simons’ recent impressive performances, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing the Netherlands international and they are currently one of the ‘top clubs’ looking to acquire his service.

The report further claims that PSG could look to cash-in on the midfielder if they receive a lucrative proposal so Arsenal could manage to secure his signature this year.

However, Sport Bild states that Barcelona, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are also plotting a swoop for the youngster so the North London club are set to face tough competition from their rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.

Simons – valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt – still has three and a half years left in his current contract with PSG. So, Les Parisiens are in a solid position to demand a big fee if they opt to cash-in on him. Therefore, it is likely that Arsenal will have to break the bank to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this year if they formalise their interest.

The Dutchman has already showcased glimpses of his talent in recent times so he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, the North London club are well-stocked in their attacking midfield department.

So, they would be better off saving the money to reinforce other areas of the squad. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a concrete approach to purchase Simons.
