Arsenal are reportedly willing to trigger Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi’s release clause in January, as per the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

The Gunners have seemingly been exploring the possibility of signing a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with fitness issues in recent years.

Amadou Onana, Andre Trindade and Douglas Luiz have all been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club, but Zubimendi is reportedly on their radar as well.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the Spanish star over the last few transfer windows, however, they haven’t opted to make a concrete approach yet to sign him.

However, while citing and translating the print version of Mundo Deportivo, Sport Witness has reported that Arsenal are planning to reignite their interest in signing Zubimendi and they are ready to trigger his £52m release clause in January.

The report further claims that Real Sociedad and the player’s representatives haven’t ruled out Zubimendi’s departure in January. But, the player hasn’t made up his mind about whether he wants to leave his boyhood club this month.

So, the report says that Arsenal need to convince the midfielder to move to the Emirates Stadium should they eventually opt to trigger his release clause.

Zubimendi usually plays as a deep-lying playmaker at Reale Arena. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and also can contribute defensively.

The Real Sociedad star is a highly talented player and is deemed one of the best midfielders in La Liga so he would be a shrewd signing for the North London club if they purchase him before the end of this window.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to sign Zubimendi in this winter window to bolster their midfield department.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have entered the winter break having endured three consecutive defeats in all competitions. So, they will be keen on returning to winning ways when they face off against Crystal Palace in the Premier League later this month.
