Arsenal tipped to sign Ivan Toney to ‘overhaul’ Man City
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Arsenal to sign Brentford star Ivan Toney to close the gap with Manchester City and challenge for the Premier League title.
The Gunners enjoyed a promising start to this season but following a controversial defeat against Newcastle United in their previous game, they have found themselves fourth in the table with 24 points from 11 games, three points behind the league leaders Man City.
Although the North London club enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in that encounter, they couldn’t create many chances for their attackers. So, they eventually had to return empty-handed from St James’ Park.
Plenty have been talked about VAR decisions in that game, but the concerning thing for Arsenal is their striker’s lack of productivity in front of the goal in big games.
They have already faced the top seven sides on five occasions in the league this term, where Gabriel Jesus – who has been struggling with injury issues this season – has managed to score a solitary goal for the North London club, while Eddie Nketiah hasn’t scored any.
Toney to Arsenal
It seems Mikel Arteta has realised that his team need firepower in the attacking department so Arsenal have started to explore the market to sign a new centre-forward.
Now, the Daily Mail quotes Carragher as saying that Arsenal need to sign a new striker to bridge the gap with Man City and challenge for the league titles. The pundit says that he is a big fan of Toney and the striker could be a very good option for the Emirates club, although there is a question mark whether the 27-year-old can perform at the highest level for a big club such as the Gunners.
Carragher said:
“Yes he could [join Arsenal] and he is a different type of striker. Huge fan of his but making jump to a big club and can you not cope with the scrutiny, there’s not that expectation against Brentford. No doubt that the quality is there, but take Arsenal to title? Arsenal might need to take that chance if they don’t fix that position and the goalkeeper situation then difficult to overhaul Man City.”
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Toney and it has been suggested that Brentford could be open to letting their star man leave if they receive an offer of around £60m from the player’s potential suitors such as the Gunners. So, Arteta’s side will have to spend big to acquire the Englishman’s service in the upcoming transfer window if they formalise their interest.
