Arsenal weighing up January swoop to sign Ollie Watkins

By on October 16, 2023

Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a January swoop for Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Having strengthened several positions in the summer window, the Gunners are seemingly prioritising to bolster the frontline next year. Several names have been mentioned as potential targets in recent times with Ivan Toney being suggested as the primary option, but Watkins is now emerging as a serious target.

After moving to Villa Park back in 2020, the 27-year-old has established himself as a key member of the Villans first eleven over the last few years. But, he has seemingly managed to elevate his game following the arrival of Unai Emery as the new head coach.

Having enjoyed a promising campaign last term, Watkins has continued his eye-catching displays this season as well, scoring four goals and registering as many assists in eight league appearances.

So, it appears after being impressed by Watkins’ recent performances, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him to reinforce their attacking department.

Watkins to Arsenal

According to the report by Fichajes, Arsenal are contemplating signing a new striker in January and have identified Watkins as a serious option.

The report further claims that the striker could be tempted to move to the Emirates Stadium in the winter window so Arsenal could manage to persuade the forward to join the club should they formalise their interest.

However, Fichajes states that securing Watkins’ signature won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Aston Villa are keen on keeping hold of their star man as they are looking to build a squad that can compete for the European spot regularly.

So, the report says that Arsenal will have to submit a significant proposal to purchase Watkins next year, but they can’t spend big at the moment unless they raise funds by making big sales.

The Villa star – valued at around £48m by Transfermarkt – is a Premier League proven forward so he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal to reinforce their frontline. However, it is looking highly unlikely that Aston Villa will let their star man leave in the January window.
