Arsenal agree deal in principle with Brentford to sign Raya

By on August 9, 2023

Arsenal have reportedly agreed on a deal in principle with Brentford to sign David Raya this summer and the player is now set to undergo medical this week before the deal gets finalised, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have already signed Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber to bolster their squad this summer but it has been reported that the North London club won’t stop their spending spree just yet as Mikel Arteta is keen on adding more firepower in this transfer window.

It was thought that Arsenal would be prioritising moves for a new midfielder and right-winger between now and the end of this window, however, out of nowhere, they have decided to make a move for Raya after opting to let Matt Turner leave the club.

The Gunners initially submitted an opening proposal of around £23m, including bonuses to purchase the Spaniard after agreeing on personal terms with the player.

But, Brentford rejected that offer as they wanted more money to let their star man leave. Now, writing on Twitter, Romano has reported that Arsenal have reached an agreement with the Bees to sign Raya and the financial package of this deal is £30m, including add-ons.

The journalist further claims that the two clubs are now sorting out the paperwork and after that, the player will undergo medical this week before signing a five-year contract with the Emirates club.

Romano wrote:

“BREAKING: Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign David Raya, here we go! Deal agreed with Brentford after personal terms last week. Documents being prepared between the clubs, medical to be booked this week. Raya only wanted AFC move.

“Total package of David Raya deal will be close to £30m total package fee, being clarified in the next hours. Raya will sign contract until June 2028 at Arsenal, medical later this week.”

Raya has showcased his talent in the Premier League over the last few years and the North Londoners will be hoping that he will be able to replicate the same performance at the Emirates Stadium as well.

However, having already got Aaron Ramsdale in the squad, it is going to be interesting to see how Arteta manages to keep both shot-stoppers happy by providing proper game-time to them.
