Arsenal plotting swoop for Sporting star Goncalo Inácio

By on June 28, 2023

Arsenal are reportedly plotting a summer swoop for Sporting CP star Goncalo Inácio, as per the Spanish outlet AS.

After coming through the Lions’ youth system, the 21-year-old made his senior debut back in 2020 before establishing himself as a key first-team member under Ruben Amorim.

The youngster enjoyed a promising campaign at the Jose Alvalade Stadium last term, registering three assists and keeping seven clean-sheets in 33 Liga Portugal appearances. It appears Inácio’s impressive displays for Sporting have attracted the attention of several big European clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool.

According to the report by AS, Arsenal have been showing an interest in the Portuguese international and they could make a move for him over the coming weeks.

The report further claims that Inácio could leave the Jose Alvalade Stadium this summer and Sporting want a fee of around £39[€45m] to let him leave. So, Arsenal will have to spend a big chunk of their transfer budget to sign the defender.

Inácio to Arsenal

However, AS says that purchasing Inácio won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Newcastle United and Liverpool are also keen on signing him this summer.

Having narrowly missed out on winning the league title last term, it has been suggested that Arsenal are set to spend big in this transfer window to rebuild a squad that can challenge on all fronts from next season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have so far been busy in this transfer window and they have already agreed to sign Kai Havertz from Chelsea. Now, Arsenal are focused on securing Declan Rice’s signature and they are closing in on a deal to lure him to the Emirates Stadium having submitted a British record £105m bid.

The North London club are also planning to strengthen their defence and have been pushing hard to sign Jurrien Timber. Arsenal have submitted two bids worth up to £41m and Ajax are yet to respond whether they are willing to accept the Gunners’ latest proposal.

So, it seems Timber is Arsenal’s primary target to strengthen their defence and it is going to be interesting to see whether Mikel Arteta opt to sign another defensive option over the coming weeks if they purchase the Netherlands international.

Inácio is quick, technically sound, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back and also excellent in defensive contributions. He is an extremely talented player and possesses high potential so, he would be an excellent signing for Arsenal if they decide to purchase him in this transfer window.
