Arsenal open talks to sign Leicester star Youri Tielemans

Arsenal have reportedly opened negotiations to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer, as per the TEAMtalk.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium since last summer and it was even thought that the Belgian was the Gunners’ primary target to strengthen their engine room at the beginning of this season.

However, the north London club never push forward with a deal as it was previously reported that they felt Leicester were demanding an unrealistic fee to sell their star man – who had entered the final 12 months of his deal and rejected several proposals to sign an extension.

So, Arsenal cooled their interest and shifted focus to alternative targets to bolster the engine room. However, with Arsenal looking to strengthen their midfield for next season, it appears Tielemans remains on their radar.

According to the report by TEAMtalk, Arsenal have already opened talks with Tielemans’ representatives over a potential summer move as the Gunners are looking snap him up for free.

However, the report claims that the 25-year-old is asking for a huge financial package to join the North London club as a free agent and that has jeopardised this deal as the Premier League leaders aren’t willing to accept his demands. So, it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta’s side manage to persuade the midfielder to lower his demands to get this deal done.

The report also says that Arsenal are likely to face tough competition from Liverpool and Newcastle United in getting any potential deal over the line as they are also keen on signing the Leicester star this summer.

Tielemans – valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt – is a versatile midfielder and can be deployed in multiple positions in the middle of the park. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, can chip in with some important goals and also can contribute defensively as well.

He would be a very good signing for Arsenal if they manage to lure the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium at the end of this season. However, It is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal decide to formalise their interest in signing him to strengthen their midfield department this summer.
