Arsenal could make January swoop for Barcelona star Torres
Arsenal could reportedly make a January swoop for Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, as per the 90min journalist Graeme Bailey.
It has widely been touted that the Gunners are keen on strengthening their squad this month in order to maintain a title charge this term. The attacking department is seemingly one of the positions where Mikel Arteta wants to add depth this January and Mykhaylo Mudryk was thought to be his primary target.
However, after seeing Chelsea hijack their move for the Ukrainian international, the north London club are now exploring other options to bolster the front line before the window shuts.
Leandro Trossard, Raphinha and Moussa Diaby have all recently been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium and Ferran Torres’ name has now emerged as another viable option.
Speaking on 90min’s Talking Transfers podcast, Bailey said that after missing out on signing Mudryk, Arsenal could turn their attention to Torres – valued at around £31m by Transfermarkt – this month. Bailey says Arsenal have been following the forward for a very long time and feels he would be a ‘sensational’ signing for the north London club.
Torres to Arsenal
The journalist further states that Arteta’s side could intensify their efforts to sign Torres and this deal could happen before the window slams shut. Barcelona could let the Spaniard leave and the chance to sign the player on loan could open up for the Gunners.
Bailey said:
“He’s [Torres] a player who Arsenal have liked for a long time, even before he left City. Mikel Arteta knows this boy well. I think he is a perfect fit for Arsenal, I really do. Of all the players linked, I think Ferran Torres, under the radar, could be a sensational pick-up for Arsenal.
“Keep an eye on this, this one could happen. It’s got chances. Barca could loan him. So yeah, I think Torres could be the one that Arsenal turn to.”
With Arsenal lacking options in their attack after the first-choice front three, Torres could be a very good acquisition. The Spain international can play anywhere across the front line and therefore, he will be able to support both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli if he were to join the club.
It will be interesting to see whether the Premier League leader formalise their interest in signing Torres this month in order to boost their chances of lifting the title this campaign.
