Arsenal are reportedly plotting a swoop for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, as per the Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb.

The 26-year-old joined the Serie A giants during the summer of 2021 from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of around £12m. The Dutchman took no time to settle down in the new surroundings and straightaway enjoyed a stellar debut campaign at the San Siro, scoring five goals and notching up four assists in 33 league appearances last term.

The defender has showcased consistency and continued his brilliant form this season just before club football took a pause due to the ongoing Qatar World Cup.

The Inter man was called up to the Netherlands squad for the 2022 World Cup and he has been a key starter in Louis van Gaal’s first eleven. After helping his side in reaching the knockout stage, the defender was the catalyst in their 3-1 victory over the USA in the round of 16, scoring a solitary goal and registering two assists.

According to the report by Calciomercatoweb, Dumfries is attracting attention from big European clubs and the Nerazzurri could cash in on the 26-year-old this January in order to make the most profit out of the Dutchman’s sale.

Denzel Dumfries to Arsenal

The report further claims that Arsenal are among the Premier League clubs who are eyeing a move for the talented defender and the Serie A side could ask for a fee of around £56m to sell their star man.

The report also says that the Gunners could offer a potential swap deal to sign Dumfries this winter. Takehiro Tomiyasu – who is valued at around £22m – could be included in this deal plus £34m in transfer fee could be offered to match the Serie A giants’ valuation.

Dumfries would be a great acquisition for Arsenal. However, offering Tomiyasu to get this deal done might not be the right way forward.

The Japanese international has been one of the most consistent performers at the Emirates Stadium since joining the club last year and Mikel Arteta would not want to lose him.

So, it will be interesting to see whether Arsenal make a move for Dumfries this January. Although the Inter man would be a very good acquisition, the reported £56m valuation would be way too high for the Emirates outfit to broker a deal for him this winter.
