Arsenal are to open talks over a January swoop for Orlando City winger Facundo Torres, as per The Evening Standard.

The 22-year-old joined the MLS club from Uruguayan side Penarol for a fee of around £7.75m back in January 2022. The youngster took no time to settle down in the new surroundings, scoring nine goals and notching up eight assists in 34 league appearances this term.

After missing out on strengthening the wide areas in the summer transfer window, Mikel Arteta’s side appear to be keen on adding more firepower to their flanks in January. Arsenal have already been linked with a move for Cody Gakpo, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Yeremy Pino and Wilfried Zaha, while Torres’ name is the new addition to that list.

According to the report by the Evening Standard, Arsenal are contemplating a move for Facundo Torres in the winter transfer window, in order to create competition for Bukayo Saka, and the Gunners are set to hold talks with the player’s representatives over a potential move.

Torres to Arsenal

The report further claims that the north London club’s interest in the 22-year-old grew following a recommendation from scout Toni Lima – who has previously spotted talents like Neymar and Philippe Coutinho.

Facundo Torres is valued at around £6m by Transfermarkt but he still has three years left in his current contract, plus an option to extend the deal for one more year, so Orlando City are under no pressure to sell on the cheap.

Torres is a left-footed winger who can be deployed on either flank. So, he can deputise for both Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, can create chances and also has an eye for scoring goals. Therefore, the youngster could be a very good addition to Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal have enjoyed success in recent times when signing young South American talents with Martinelli being the obvious example of someone who has established himself as an integral part of Arteta’s system. So, the Emirates faithful will be hoping that Torres would be able to follow in Martinelli’s footsteps if he were to join Arsenal in the upcoming transfer window.
