Former England forward turned pundit Michael Owen has revealed that he is surprised by Arsenal’s transformation this season and thinks the Gunners are one of the contenders to challenge for the Premier League title this term.

Mikel Arteta’s side have started the new campaign exceptionally well. They are currently sitting at the top of the table with 24 points from nine games, one point ahead of defending champions Manchester City.

The debate regarding whether Arsenal are one of the contenders to fight for the title this season has been boosted following the north London club’s victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners displayed an excellent performance at Emirates against Jurgen Klopp’s side and earned a well-deserved 3-2 victory. Bukayo Saka was the protagonist for Arsenal in this win as he scored twice following Gabriel Martinelli’s opener.

Speaking on Premier League Productions (via HITC), after the game versus Liverpool, Owen said that Arsenal are one of the best teams in the league alongside Man City. The ex-striker also said that the north London club are in contention to win the Premier League title this term due to the fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are struggling at the moment.

The Pundit further stated that it isn’t a fluke that Arteta’s side have enjoyed a great start to the season. The Spanish boss has very good players at his disposal and they have been displaying excellent performances so far this campaign and are currently full of confidence.

Owen surprised by Arsenal’s transformation

When asked whether Arsenal are the next best team in the league after Man City, Owen replied:

“I never thought I would say this, but yes I do. The way they [Arsenal] are. There is no fluke about it, at the moment. They have got very, very good players. They are playing in a very good way. Confidence throughout the team and confidence at the club. Some of the main protagonists are struggling, at the moment. So, yes I do think they could be the biggest challengers. I never thought I would say that. I can’t believe it.”

Arsenal have been displaying great performances so far this season and the biggest plus for them is that they are showcasing consistency that they lacked over the past few campaigns.

Arteta’s side commenced the season with the objective of finishing in the top four and winning one of the cup competitions. However, the way they are playing at the moment the Emirates faithful can feel ambitious and dream about going head-to-head against the Citizens for the Premier League title.

So, it will be interesting to see how Arsenal’s season unfolds in the upcoming months. Although it is very early in this new campaign, the Gunners are the only team showing signs of possessing the capability to stop City from winning back-to-back titles.
