Former defender Rio Ferdinand is impressed by Arsenal’s new summer signing Fabio Vieira after the Portuguese’s excellent performance against Brentford.

The 22-year-old joined Mikel Arteta’s side from FC Porto for a fee of around £34m. After recovering from an ankle injury that was discovered during his medical, the youngster made his debut against Manchester United before making his first start in the Gunners colours in the Europa League clash versus FC Zurich.

The midfielder was called upon for his full Premier League debut last Sunday following an injury to club captain Martin Odegaard and the former Porto man showcased his qualities at the Gtech Community Stadium, scoring a stunner from long-range.

Speaking on his YouTube channel Five, ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand was full of praise for Vieira’s goal against Thomas Frank’s side and said that the 22-year-old seems to be an amazing player and a great signing for Arsenal.

Ferdinand said:

“Vieira’s goal, wow. Vieira’s goal was top. Lovely goal. He looks a really good player, by the way, good signing.

Ferdinand praises Arsenal star Vieira

Fabio Vieira has looked promising in his first two starts for Arsenal and the goal against Brentford will provide a lot of confidence in him. The midfielder seamlessly deputised for Odegaard on Sunday afternoon and it appears that the Gunners have done great business in signing the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese has showcased last season for Sergio Conceicao’s side that he can be productive in front of the goal, scoring six goals and notching up 14 assists in 27 Liga Portugal appearances.

So, Vieira is seemingly a great coup for Arsenal this summer. Mikel Arteta likes to deploy two advanced midfielders with one sitting deep in his 4-3-3 system and the Spanish boss could use Odegaard and the ex-Porto man together at times as the two number tens.

Granit Xhaka has done excellent so far this season and it seems he has overcome his disciplinary issues as well. So, while the Swiss is the preferred choice for Arteta in the more advanced midfield position, Vieira could easily be an option to play in that role during the 29-year-old’s absence.
