Gabriel Jesus to undergo Arsenal medical on Tuesday
According to The Sun, Gabriel Jesus is due to fly-in to London for his medical on Tuesday after Arsenal agreed a £45m deal with Manchester City.
Arsenal have been in the market for a new striker since allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Barcelona in January. Alexandre Lacazette also re-joined Lyon on a free transfer this summer so we desperately need to bring in at least one top class front-man.
Gabriel emerged as Mikel Arteta’s prime target and after lengthy negotiations with Manchester City, Arsenal finally agreed terms with the Premier League champions over the weekend.
The Sun are one of several media outlets claiming that a £45m deal has been agreed between the two clubs and they say Gabriel will fly-in to London on Tuesday to undergo his medical.
Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte also says Gabriel will have his medical on Tuesday before signing a five-year contract worth around £193,000-a-week [£10m per year] at the Emirates.
Arsenal had to fend off interest from a number of other top clubs with the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham also linked, but Gabriel opted to link-up with Arteta having worked closely with him during their time together at City.
Gabriel had just one year left on his contract at the Etihad and decided to leave as he knew he’d fall down the pecking order following the arrival of Erling Haaland.
Quality addition
The 25-year-old may not be the out-and-out goalscorer that many fans expected this summer, but there is no denying that Gabriel is a quality player who will improve Arsenal.
He provided 13 goals and 13 assists in 41 games for City last season, despite playing out wide in several matches, and he’s one of the hardest working forwards in the league.
The Brazilian international should fit well into Arteta’s system and he’s also capable of playing anywhere across the front three, so he’ll give the boss plenty of options in the final third.
I am still a little concerned that we’re light up front with Gabriel and Eddie Nketiah our only senior options. Gabriel Martinelli can also play up top but is more effective from the wing, and we don’t appear to have a ‘Plan B’ from the bench.
However, Gabriel Jesus will be an excellent addition to the squad. Let’s hope this proposed deal gets over the line without any last minute complications….
