According to Goal journalist Charles Watts, Fabio Vieira is at London Colney undergoing his medical after Porto confirmed a £34m deal has been agreed with Arsenal.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is working hard trying to strengthen his squad with Gabriel Jesus and Youri Tielemans widely touted as his main transfer targets this summer.

However, fans were shocked by news that emerged on Thursday that claimed Arsenal have agreed a deal with Porto to buy attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira.

Porto have now confirmed this news in a statement today after announcing that Vieira is off to Arsenal in a deal worth an initial £30m [€35m] with a further £4m [€5m] in add-ons.

Goal journalist Charles Watts says Vieira is at London Colney today to undergo his medical after flying in from Greece on Thursday night. The medical checks could take a couple of days but the 22-year-old is set to sign a five-year deal at the Emirates.

This transfer came out of nowhere and has taken many by surprise, myself included. I just didn’t expect Arsenal to splash £30+m on another attacking midfielder when we have other areas that desperately need strengthened.

However, Vieira is a supreme talent and could prove to be an excellent piece of business by Arsenal. The Portuguese U21 international contributed 6 goals and 14 assists last season despite only starting 15 games and he’s forged a reputation as one of the best young creators in Europe.

Vieira is predominantly a central attacking midfielder so he’ll compete with Martin Odegaard for that role, but he’s also capable of playing in a deeper No.8 position or out on the wing so he’ll give Arteta options.

I personally don’t see him being a first team regular in the league straight away but he’ll still see plenty of minutes – especially in Europe and in the cups – and he’ll add some much-needed depth to the squad.

Vieira is set to become Arsenal’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Marquinhos and Matt Turner. He won’t be the last addition with widespread reports suggesting we’re still working on deals for Jesus and Tielemans….
