Arteta Has Eyes on Sevilla Striker for January Transfer Window

By on October 11, 2021

Arsenal spent a great deal on signings this summer, bringing in players worth more than £150 million. And the shopping spree is far from over. While the January transfer window will probably not bring in players like Ben White and Ødegaard, we can expect top talent to be added to the Gunners’ roster. His latest target: Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri.

Youssef En-Nesyri

The 24-year-old Moroccan player made his professional debut in the second team of Malága, playing in the Tercera División. The same year, he made it to the first team and immediately made his presence felt by scoring a double in a friendly just eight days after his promotion. After scoring six goals in his first pre-season with the first team, he signed a contract until 2020. His first entrance to high-profile football, and the player markets at Vwin Thailand and other bookmakers, was an away match against Espanyol, and his first goal in La Liga came less than a month after signing the deal, in a match against SD Eibar, where he scored the match-winner.

After Malága’s relegation in 2018, En-Nesyri moved on to Madrid-based club Leganés for a couple of years. His time there was pretty eventful, with 49 league games played and about a dozen goals scored, including all three goals in a match against Real Betis, which made him the first Leganés player to score a hat-trick in La Liga.

As you might expect, his performance attracted the attention of several bigger teams, including Sevilla – the latter signed him in January 2020. Two days later, he was already on the turf, and less than a month into his time at Sevilla, he had his first start with the team – and he celebrated with a goal. With Sevilla, he played in the Europa League and the UEFA Champions League and earned La Liga’s “Player of the Season” award this January.

There’s a problem with the front

Forward Alexandre Lacazette is one of the players who look set to leave the Gunners behind next summer, and so is striker Eddie Nketiah. At the same time, Aubameyang is also expected to leave the club – the Gabonese striker was expected to leave Emirates last summer. But even with his new contract in his pocket, he is not performing at his best, with his goal ratio decreasing significantly in the last season.

To plug the hole in the front, the Gunners reportedly made their bid for the 24-year-old Moroccan. But they are not the only ones – according to the news portal ABCDesevilla, there are five more clubs competing for him. But this piece of news may be much ado about nothing, considering that En-Nesyri has four years remaining on his contract with the Seville team – and he previously said that he’s happy staying in La Liga.
