Report: Arsenal in talks to sign 6ft 3in star, ready to agree £6.5m-a-year deal

According to the Express, Arsenal are in talks to sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer and are prepared to meet his £6.5m-a-year wage demands.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is desperately trying to revamp his squad and has already snapped-up left-back Nuno Tavares from Benfica while highly-rated midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga has arrived from Anderlecht.

Centre-back Ben White is expected to complete a move to north London over the coming days but Arsenal are in the market for further reinforcements with a new goalkeeper, right-back, midfielder and No.10 all reportedly on the agenda.

However, it appears Arteta is also looking to bring in another striker as well and Abraham has emerged as a potential target with The Athletic reporting last week that Arsenal are keen on signing the Chelsea front-man.

The Express claims we have now opened talks over a potential move and indicated to Abraham’s camp that we’ll meet his £125,000-a-week wage demands – which works out at £6.5m-per-season.

However, any deal for the 23-year-old won’t be straightforward as although Chelsea are willing to offload Abraham, the newspaper says they want £40m for his signature – a figure Arsenal aren’t prepared to pay.

The idea of a loan with obligation to buy next summer has been floated in the media and that sort of deal may appeal to Arsenal, but it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be open to such an arrangement.

The Blues are reportedly wanting to sell Abraham to raise funds for a big-money striker such as Erling Haaland so they’ll probably want to try and cash-in rather than send the player out on loan.

However, it’s obvious Abraham isn’t in Thomas Tuchel’s plans as he played just 17 minutes of football during the final three months of last season so the striker may try and force a move away from west London.

I’ve never been Abraham’s biggest fan as he just doesn’t look like a technically gifted footballer but he has a decent goalscoring record [30 in 82 games for Chelsea] and at 6ft 3in, he’d certainly give Arsenal another dimension in attack if he does join.

Even if we could agree a deal with Chelsea, the Express says any move for Abraham would depend on Arsenal offloading Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah. Both strikers have just 12 months left on their contracts so it looks like we’re going to cash-in rather than risk losing them for nothing next summer.

I’m sure we could find buyers for both players but we probably won’t generate the £40m needed to buy Abraham, so we’re still going to have to persuade Chelsea to be flexible with any potential deal.
