Fabrizio Romano: Player in London to undergo medical after Arsenal agree deal
According to Fabrizio Romano, Nuno Tavares has arrived in London to undergo his medical after Arsenal agreed an initial £6.9m [€2m] deal with Benfica to sign the full-back.
Mikel Arteta has been in the market for another left-back to act as support for Kieran Tierney next season as Sead Kolasinac is expected to seal another move away from the club after spending last season out on loan.
Tavares has emerged as our prime target with widespread reports in recent weeks suggesting that Arsenal have been locked in talks with Benfica trying to thrash out a deal.
Portuguese publication A Bola reported yesterday that Arsenal had finally agreed a deal worth £6.9m [€8m] up front and another £1.7m [€2m] in add-ons, meaning the total deal could be worth around £8.6m.
A Bola suggested that Tavares had been given the green light to travel to the UK to finalise the move and Romano says the defender has now arrived in London to undergo his medical.
The Guardian journalist claims it’s now a ‘done deal’ and Tavares will sign a five-year contract at the Emirates, with Arsenal now believed to be working on wrapping-up a move for Anderlecht midfielder Albert Lokonga.
Arsenal have an agreement signed with Benfica for Nuno Tavares since yesterday. Done deal, no doubt. Fee will be €8m, plus add ons. Nuno will sign until June 2026 – he’s in London to undergo his medical. 🔴🤝 #AFC

So, as long as there are no late hiccups, Tavares should become Arsenal’s first major signing of the summer window and he’ll be an exciting long-term addition to the squad.
The 21-year-old is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Portuguese football and has all the attributes needed to develop into a top class left-back during his time in north London.
Tavares is unlikely to challenge Tierney for the first team shirt just yet but it’s good to see Arsenal working smart in the transfer market to buy exciting young talent that can develop under Arteta and increase in value.
