Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal in talks with agent as Arteta eyes move to sign 25y/o star

By on June 18, 2021

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are in talks with the agent of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana discussing a possible move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Mikel Arteta needs to strengthen throughout his team over the coming weeks with the boss expected to be in the market for a new right-back, left-back, two midfielders and a No.10 as he looks to overhaul his squad.

However, Arsenal also need to bring in at least one new goalkeeper as Mat Ryan – who acted as No.2 last season – has returned to Brighton after his loan spell came to an end. Bernd Leno’s future is also in doubt so we may even need to bring in two goalkeepers.

Onana has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal recently and Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano says we’ve opened talks with his agent over a potential move to north London this summer.

Romano says nothing is done or even advanced, but Onana is a ‘serious opportunity’ for Arsenal and we’re speaking to his representatives to assess his situation.

Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Romano said:

“They are in touch with the agent. They like the player, he’s a serious opportunity but it’s not advanced or closed yet so now Arsenal will talk with people close to Onana, with his agent, to understand the situation. But, it’s not done yet.”

Onana is currently serving a suspension from football following a failed drugs test but he recently had his ban reduced to nine months meaning he’ll be able to play competitive football again from November 3rd.

Bargain

The 25-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract so Ajax are ready to cash-in before losing him for nothing next year, and The Sun suggests that £7.7m will be enough to get a deal done.

The Cameroonian international has played over 200 times for Ajax and conceded just 15 goals in 20 appearances to help the club run away with the Eredivisie title last season.

There is no doubt Onana would be a bargain if Arsenal can snap him up for around £7m and he’d be a ready-made replacement for Leno if the German international decides he wants to leave.

However, Arsenal aren’t the only club in the running for his signature as clubs from England and France are also being linked with Onana so we’ll have to act fast if we want to lure him to north London.
