Ornstein makes Arsenal transfer claim as Arteta responds to Buendia & Costa links
David Ornstein claims Arsenal are targetting a new goalkeeper this month and Mikel Arteta has responded to reports linking the club with Emi Buendia and Diego Costa.
Arsenal were strongly linked with several keepers in the summer after deciding to sell Emi Martinez to Aston Villa with Brentford’s David Raya mentioned in the media as a prime target.
We failed to land any established stopper to offer competition to Bernd Leno and ended up signing Alex Runarsson from Dijon. The 25-year-old was initially snapped-up as a No.3 but our failure to sign another more senior player meant he’s played back-up for Leno during the first half of the season.
However, Ornstein has claimed in The Athletic that Arsenal will enter the market once again for a new No.2 this month as Arteta looks to bring in proper competition for Leno. It’s not clear whether we’ll renew our interest in Raya but the priority is to make a permanent signing. If we once again fail to land our targets, Ornstein says Arsenal will look to sign a seasoned pro on a short-term loan.
The boss confirmed this news at his pre-match press conference today when he admitted he is in the market for a new goalkeeper. If Arsenal manage to sign someone, then Runarsson could be sent out on loan to gain some first team experience.
It makes sense as it’s clear Runarsson is currently well short of the level needed to play for Arsenal. Let’s hope we can sign a proper No.2 and send the Icelandic international out on loan for the second half of the season.
Arsenal are also being linked with a number of outfield players this month with Norwich attacking midfielder Emi Buendia and veteran striker Diego Costa touted as targets by the media in recent weeks.
Arteta was quizzed about the duo at his press conference today but the boss didn’t give too much away other than saying he didn’t want to go through all the names we’re being linked with one by one. He told Arsenal.com:
on links with Emi Buendia and Diego Costa…
We get linked with players that we haven’t even discussed so I’m not going to go name by name.
I don’t see Arsenal going for Costa but Buendia would make a lot of sense and he should be available for a reasonable fee considering Norwich were relegated in the summer.
Let’s see how things go over the coming weeks but Arsenal could do with at least two new signings to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season, so let’s hope Arteta and Edu get the business done.

Why would Buendia be available for a ‘reasonable fee’ when he is on a long term contract and Norwich are top of the Championship?

Getting a good keeper is good but our no one priority right now is getting a very good attacking midfielder
