Injured Arsenal star returns to training ahead of Tottenham trip
Mikel Arteta has confirmed Thomas Partey will return to training today ahead of Arsenal’s crucial trip to Tottenham this weekend.
Partey hasn’t featured since suffering a thigh injury during our defeat to Aston Villa last month and the recent team news updates on the official club website seemed to suggest he wasn’t close to returning to action any time soon.
However, Arteta revealed on Wednesday that the midfielder has been doing individual training sessions at London Colney for over a week and was due to have a scan later this week to see if the thigh injury has healed sufficiently.
The boss provided another update after Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Rapid Vienna on Thursday night and he confirmed Partey has been given the green light to resume full training today.
The 27-year-old is desperate to make his return to the first team but the club will assess him over the next couple of days before making a decision over his possible involvement against Tottenham on Sunday.
Speaking on Thursday night after Arsenal’s Europa League victory, Arteta told Arsenal.com:
on Thomas Partey’s fitness…
Well, he is putting a lot of pressure on us! He is training tomorrow [Friday] with us, and let’s see how it goes in the next few days.
It would be a huge boost if Partey was passed fit to face Spurs as we desperately need a positive result on Sunday and the midfielders presence would make a massive difference to the team.
However, I hope the club don’t take any unnecessary risks as we don’t want to aggravate the injury any further and rule him out for even longer so I have a feeling the best Partey can hope for is a place on the bench.
Elsewhere, Nicolas Pepe will be suspended following his sending off against Leeds while David Luiz will need to be assessed after suffering a nasty cut to his head during Arsenal’s defeat to Wolves.
Gabriel Martinelli is still working his way back to fitness but Pablo Mari made a successful return to the first team last night while Calum Chambers also got a few minutes under his belt.
