Arsenal could sign 26-year-old attacker as part of tempting proposal
According to L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain have offered Arsenal the chance to sign Julian Draxler as part of a player swap deal involving Matteo Guendouzi heading back to France.
It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta wants to offload Guendouzi this summer as the Gunners boss tries to raise money to help fund potential moves for midfield targets such as Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.
We’ve reportedly tried to use Guendouzi as bait to land the pair but Atletico Madrid and Lyon aren’t interested so Arsenal are struggling to find a taker for the French under-21 international.
However, there is potentially some positive news coming out of France as L’Equipe claims that PSG are keen on luring Guendouzi back to Paris where he began his career in the youth ranks before joining Lorient in 2014.
However, rather than stump up the circa £35m that Arsenal reportedly want for the 21-year-old midfielder, L’Equipe says PSG are offering Draxler in part-exchange to reduce the financial outlay.
Draxler has long been linked with a move to Arsenal as we came close to signing him when he left Schalke in 2015 and were linked again when he moved from Wolfsburg to PSG in 2017.
It remains to be seen whether Arteta will be interested in taking the German international this summer but it may be a tempting proposition as Draxler is a versatile attacking midfielder who has huge ability. He’s just not fulfilled his potential yet.
The 26-year-old can play as an attacking central midfielder – an area Arsenal need to strengthen – or out on either wing so he’d give Arteta plenty of options and he’s coming in to his peak playing years.
Despite never being a first team regular, Draxler has managed to provide 20 goals and 32 assists in his 140 appearances for PSG but I think he could thrive if he’s given a starring role in a team like Arsenal.
We’re clearly struggling to offload Guendouzi so unless we find a buyer soon, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to take Draxler in exchange as long as we got around £15m-£20m as well as the German.
That would give Arteta some money to add to his transfer kitty and if we can sell Lucas Torreira to an Italian team, then we might just have enough to pay Partey’s release clause.
I’m sure there will be plenty of transfer negotiations over the coming weeks….let’s see what Arsenal can get done before October 5th.
