All the dreams and aspirations of Manchester City making it to the final have been shattered by Arsenal, after the Gunners booked their place in the FA Cup final for the 21st time in their history. Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played a key role in the win after scoring both goals to secure a 2-0 victory, setting up a mouth-watering final with Chelsea after they beat Man Utd on Sunday.

Aubameyang opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a lovely finish before racing clear to seal the win in the 71st minute. The victory also gave Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta bragging rights over Pepe Guardiola, his former mentor at Manchester City.

The opening goal of the Gunners came following a lovely passing move that started from the goalkeeper and ended with Nicolas Pepe finding Aubameyang with a superb cross which he finished with style. This put a lot of pressure on City to respond and although they saw a lot of the ball, it was Arsenal who almost doubled their lead just before half time when Shkodran Mustafi forced a fine save from City keeper Ederson.

In the early stages of second half, City had a penalty appeal turned down by referee John Moss after Raheem Sterling went down too easily. On the other hand, Arsenal continued to show a perfect blend of offence and defense as Emiliano Martinez did a great job of saving from Riyad Mahrez before they made it 2-0. Aubameyang dashed forward onto Kieran Tierney’s quick pass, the Man City was not able to stop him and the Arsenal hitman slotted home for 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Man City dominated possession during the final stages of the match as they looked to get back into the game but they struggled to break Arsenal down. David Luiz successfully blocked a Sterling should while Aymeric Laporte blazed high and wide from outside the box as the Gunners held firm to protect their lead.

After the win, Luiz praised Arteta’s influence and says the players will do all they can to lift the trophy at Wembley.

“We have an amazing coach but we can’t go from 0 to 100. We are improving. The spirit was great and I’m happy for the team because they deserve it. We have a final to play this season and we will try and win a title for this club because this club deserves to win a trophy.”

The FA Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea will be held on August 1. Man City, on the other hand, will be shifting their focus on their journey for the Champions League, as they are set to face-off against new Spanish champion Real Madrid in the second leg of their last-16 tie next month.
