[Ratings] Spurs 2-1 Arsenal: Martinez shines but Kolasinac horror show costs Gunners

By on July 12, 2020

Arsenal blew a great chance to win the North London Derby after somehow losing to a painfully poor Tottenham side 2-1 this afternoon.

Arsenal started slowly but broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through a stunning strike from Alexandre Lacazette as he blasted into the top corner from 20 yards to make it 1-0.

However, we shot ourselves in the foot once again to gift Tottenham an immediate equaliser. A sloppy pass from Sead Kolasinac caught David Luiz wrong-footed and Hueng-min son took advantage to pull Spurs level.

Arsenal dominated the second half and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang twice went close to putting us ahead. There was only one team pushing for a winner and that was Arsenal but we got sucker-punched at the other end as Toby Alderweireld headed home from a corner to make it 2-1 to Tottenham in the 81st minute.

There was no response from Arsenal so we slumped to a 2-1 defeat that means we face an uphill battle to even qualify for the Europa League this season.

Here are my ratings:

Martinez  8/10 | Great save to deny Kane early on and made another stunning save to tip a long-range Davies effort onto the bar. Out superbly well to smother Son who was ready to tap home for 2-1 and another smart stop to deny Kane. Our best player.

Mustafi  5.5/10 | Had a solid 60 minutes then the old Mustafi arrived. He was all over the place towards the end and was lucky on two occasions that his mistakes didn’t lead to goals.

Luiz  5/10 | Caught wrong-footed by an awful Kolasinac pass but should still have done better to stop Son making it 1-1. Looked shaky all game.

Kolasinac  4/10 | Woeful performance. Absolute gift for the Tottenham equaliser. Such a poor pass and it gave Spurs an immediate way back in the game. That was just one of several errors he made.

Bellerin  6/10 | Much better going forward as he was a threat and put in a couple of decent balls but Spurs has some joy down his side of the pitch.

Ceballos  7/10 | Involved in everything. Dictated play as Arsenal dominated for long periods and worked hard to retrieve possession too. However, too many passes were sideways and just doesn’t create enough going forwards.

Xhaka  6/10 | Did well to win the ball in the build-up to Lacazette’s goal but like Ceballos his play was too ‘safe’ for most of the game.

Tierney  6.5/10 | A few nice crosses and did well to get up and down the pitch. Fairly comfortable defensively too. Solid display.

Pepe  6/10 | A largely frustrating afternoon. Saw plenty of the ball but didn’t drive at Davies as much as he should have. Went close with a curler from the edge of the area but some of his passing was poor. We need more creativity from him. Subbed.

Lacazette  7/10 | Stunning goal to open the scoring as he blasted into the top corner from 20 yards. Hold-up play was OK and set-up Auba for a shot in the second half.

Aubameyang  5.5/10 | Fluffed a decent chance to make it 1-0 and smacked the bar when he should have made it 2-1 in the 59th minute. Forced Lloris into a fine save with a lovely half-volley but just wasn’t his day in front of goal. Misses proved crucial.

Subs:

Saka   6/10 | Added some energy to our play going forward.

Willock, Nelson, Cedric   N/A | Only on for less than 10 minutes. Arteta left it too late to make his subs.
