Arsenal star provides injury update after leaving Fratton Park on crutches

By on March 3, 2020

Lucas Torreira has provided a positive update after he picked up an ankle injury during Arsenal’s FA Cup win over Portsmouth on Monday night.

The 24-year-old was recalled to the starting eleven for our FA Cup fifth round clash on the south coast after replacing Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park having been named on the bench for the previous two matches. However, Torreira lasted just 15 minutes as he was replaced by Dani Ceballos and forced off on a stretcher with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury following a strong challenge by Portsmouth’s Ryan Williams.

I, like many Arsenal fans, expected the midfielder to be ruled out for a number of weeks as it looked a nasty injury and Mikel Arteta admitted after the game on Monday night that Torreira was in a lot of pain and they were worried about bone or ligament damage.

Arteta told Arsenal.com:

“He was in a lot of pain. He is in a brace at the moment, he will be assessed in the next few days and we will know more then.

“I don’t know if it’s the bone or ligaments, we don’t know yet.”

Despite the injury setback, Arsenal went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Sokratis and Eddie Nketiah to book a date with Sheffield United in the quarter finals. Arsenal are now 9/1 to lift the FA Cup and you can use the latest betting sign up offers if you fancy backing Arteta’s men to go all the way.

However, Torreira’s injury could derail our hopes as he was then seen leaving Fratton Park wearing a protective boot and using crutches so it looked as though we were set to lose the Uruguayan international for an extended period of time.

However, it appears the injury isn’t as bad as first feared as Torreira has provided a positive update after telling his father that he just twisted his ankle, is able to move it and is ‘fine’.

The Arsenal star is quoted as saying by ESPN.

“I wanted to tap it and grabbed my ankle on the outside. It twisted me, but I can move it. I’m fine. “.

This sounds very positive. No doubt Torreira will be assessed by Arsenal’s medical team over the coming days but hopefully there is no serious damage and he can get back on the pitch soon.

A minor twist would probably keep him out of Saturday’s clash with West Ham but hopefully Torreira will be available for selection when we head to Brighton on March 14th.
