[Photos] 5 youngsters called-up as Arsenal squad flies-out for Standard Liege clash
Freddie Ljungberg has called-up several of the U23s as a young Arsenal squad flew-out ahead of our Europa League clash with Standard Liege on Thursday evening.
Arsenal have already secured qualification to the knockout stages and with a huge Premier League game against Manchester City on Sunday, Ljungberg has understandably opted to rest some of his key men.
The interim Gunners boss has turned to the youngsters to fill the squad and Emile Smith Rowe is expected to start tomorrow after being among the travelling party that flew out of Luton Airport this afternoon.
Highly rated midfielder Robbie Burton has also been included in the squad after impressing for the U23s this season while fellow youngsters Zech Medley, Tyreece John-Jules and James Olayinka are also given a call-up.
Bukayo Saka has been involved in the Arsenal first team this season and he’s made the trip to Belgium as well and I expect him to start in attack tomorrow after not being selected against West Ham.
Gabriel Martinelli is another teenager who’ll be involved as he’s been included in the travelling squad having been hugely impressive in the previous Europa League rounds.
Ljungberg has picked some experienced players as David Luiz, Calum Chambers, Sokratis, Bernd Leno and Emi Martinez are all confirmed as being in the squad based on the photos published online.
The full travelling squad hasn’t been revealed [at the time of writing] but there was no sign of the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, Sead Kolasinac, Lucas Torreira or Matteo Guendouzi in the travelling photos.
Nicolas Pepe, Granit Xhak and Hector Bellerin have been ruled out with knocks while Rob Holding and Dani Ceballos are injured. Kieran Tierney is facing three months on the sidelines with a dislocated shoulder.
Here are some photos of the squad heading to Belgium today:
