Newcastle United vs Arsenal – betting tips preview

By on August 10, 2019

Arsenal kick-off the new Premier League campaign with a tricky trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Unai Emery failed in his task to qualify for the Champions League last season so the boss is under pressure to break back into the top four this year but the bookmakers still make us the 11/8 fifth favourites to finish in the top four places.

The boss has no excuses to miss out after being backed in the transfer market this summer. It’s been a dramatic few weeks as we’ve seen the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech and Carl Jenkinson leave the club but Arsenal have made some excellent purchases with Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney all arriving to strengthen the first team.

Our away form was woeful last season so that’s something we desperately need to improve this campaign and we need to bring home a positive result against Newcastle tomorrow afternoon or risk playing catch-up on our main rivals from the first week.

Injury problems

Unfortunately Emery already has mounting injury problems as Tierney will miss at least 4 weeks with a groin injury while Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Emile Smith Rowe are also unavailable.

Alexandre Lacazette will face a late fitness test on an ankle injury while Pepe isn’t expected to start after only resuming pre-season training at the start of the month following his exploits at the AFCON.

Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac will not make the trip to St James’ Park due to fresh security incidents at their homes last week after the pair were targetted by car-jackers recently so the boss has huge selection problems to deal with.

Betting odds & tips

The latest sports betting odds have Arsenal as the 20/23 favourites to win the game while Newcastle can be backed at 10/3 – which are decent odds considering our injury problems and poor form on the road. The draw is available at 11/4.

Emery is up against Steve Bruce – who takes care of his first game in charge of Newcastle – and it should be an interesting contest but I hope we have too much quality in the end. My prediction is 2-1 Arsenal and those betting on football can back that scoreline at odds of 7/1.

Newcastle are usually strong at home and I think Arsenal’s dodgy defence will gift them plenty of chances. However, we have a lot of firepower ourselves so ‘both teams to score’ at 4/6 looks a solid bet.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has looked sharp in pre-season and will be in the running for the Golden Boot again this season. I think he’ll get off the mark tomorrow and you can bet on the Gabon international to score first in a 2-1 Arsenal win at odds of 32/1.
