Arsenal need to get proposed £45m double deal over the line on deadline day

By on August 8, 2019

With transfer deadline day here, it’s imperative that Arsenal finalise their business and get two defenders on board today or we face another difficult season scrapping for a top four finish.

Defence has been our Achilles heel for several years and it was the main reason we missed out on the top four last season. The bookmakers once again expect us to miss out with many offering odds of 7/4 on Arsenal finishing outside the top four. If you use a bet calculator you’ll see that a £100 stake would return £275 which is huge odds for a club like Arsenal just to finish inside the top four places this coming season.

So it’s clear many don’t fancy Arsenal to challenge at the top end of the table yet again, despite splashing out on top players such as Nicolas Pepe and Dani Ceballos this summer, so why is this? The answer is simple….our defence is still woeful.

Laurent Koscielny – who’s been our best defender in recent years – has left for Bordeaux leaving us even weaker at the back so it’s vital Unai Emery strengthens his options before the window closes at 5pm. A centre-back is imperative but we could also do with another full-back coming in.

Arsenal have been linked with Juventus star Daniele Rugani recently and he would be an excellent signing but it seems we’re struggling to agree terms with the Serie A champions over a deal. Emery has moved on to other targets and shock reports claim we’re in advanced talks with sign David Luiz from Chelsea.

The Brazilian international certainly has his flaws but he’d still be an upgrade on the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers so I think he’d be a decent short-term option until we bring in a proper longer-term solution next summer. The concern is he’ll reportedly cost around £20m, which seems like a big price for a 32-year-old, but we need to pay whatever it takes to sign a top centre-back before the window closes.

Arsenal have also been strongly linked with Kieran Tierney throughout the summer and it looks like we’ll finally get a deal through on deadline day after agreeing terms with Celtic. The 22-year-old will cost around £25m and I think he’ll be a huge upgrade on Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac at left-back.

Tierney has been one of the best full-backs in British football in recent years and we’ve been exposed down the left far too often lately so his signing will be vitally important if we can get a deal over the line.

Bringing in Luiz and Tierney for £45m would make a massive difference to the Arsenal back four and it could be the difference between us finishing fifth or getting back in the Champions League places again. Let’s hope we can get the deals done…
