Offers made: Arsenal launch move to sign world class South American star

By on July 5, 2019

According to reports in Spain via the Metro, Arsenal have made a surprise move to sign Marcelo but we face stiff competition for the Real Madrid full-back.

Unai Emery is keen to bring in another left-back this summer as he doesn’t appear totally convinced by Nacho Monreal or Sead Kolasinac. Nacho played most of his minutes in a back three last season with Kolasinac the preferred choice at wing-back and although he was a threat going forward, the Bosnian was poor defensively.

So Arsenal need a reliable defender at left-back who’s also comfortable playing as a wing-back and we’ve been strongly linked with Kieran Tierney in recent weeks but are struggling to agree terms with Celtic.

It looks like Emery is still keeping his options open as the Metro are citing a report from Sport that claims Arsenal have now made a shock attempt to lure Marcelo to the Emirates from Real Madrid.

The Spanish publication says Marcelo has informed the La Liga giants that he wants to leave the club after receiving a number of offers and his agent is trying to negotiate his exit from the Bernabeu with president Florentino Perez.

Arsenal are named by Sport as one of the clubs trying to sign the Brazilian international but we’ll supposedly face stiff competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan.

It’s reported that the 31-year-old is now on holiday considering the offers on the table but it looks like Arsenal are in the mix to sign the South American left-back if he’s allowed to leave Madrid this summer.

Marcelo has been with the European heavy-weights for 13 years and he’s won countless trophies, including 4 La Liga titles and 4 Champions League’s, during his 486 appearances for Los Blancos.

He’s been one of the best full-backs in the world over the past decade, however, his first team place is under serious threat after Madrid splashed £47m on left-back Ferland Mendy last month.

It appears Marcelo doesn’t want to sit on the bench and even though he’s the wrong side of 30, I still think he’s world class and he’d be a superb addition to the team if Arsenal could somehow get a deal agreed.

I’m not holding my breath though! Tierney is a far more realistic target….
