Emery reveals fresh injury concern following Arsenal’s win over Fulham
Unai Emery has revealed a fresh injury concern after Shkodran Mustafi tweaked his hamstring during Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Fulham this afternoon.
Mustafi recently missed five games after suffering a hamstring injury during the win over Huddersfield at the start of December and was rushed back for the 5-1 thrashing at Liverpool last week.
The German international was replaced at half-time at Anfield after feeling his hamstring in the first half but passed a late fitness test to be named in the starting line-up against Fulham this afternoon.
Mustafi started in a back three alongside Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny but he was once again taken off at the break with Lucas Torreira coming on as Emery switched formation to a flat back four.
The boss confirmed to reporters after our 4-1 victory over Fulham that Mustafi aggravated his hamstring issue once again and asked to be replaced at half-time but Emery is hopeful the problem is nothing too serious.
The manager told Arsenal.com:
on Mustafi…
It’s a small injury, a small problem. He didn’t feel well after the first half and said for us to change. It’s not a big injury. He wanted to play today to help us, so maybe we can give him a few days rest to help us. Yes [it’s a hamstring].
I think it’s a concern that Mustafi keeps tweaking his hamstring as that’s the second game in a row he’s been forced off at half-time so clearly the issue isn’t 100% resolved and we risk him causing some real damage.
The sensible thing to do would be to give Mustafi the time he needs to fully recover from his hamstring issue. We’ve already lost Rob Holding for the season so the last thing we need is another centre-back like Mustafi tearing his hamstring and being ruled out for months.
