Arsenal dealt fresh injury blow: star set to miss Newcastle game
According to reports via TeamTalk, Arsenal have been dealt a blow with the news that Lucas Torreira is expected to miss Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United through injury.
Torreira has been eased in to action by Unai Emery since making a £26m move from Sampdoria this summer as he’s yet to start a game but the midfielder has been hugely impressive off the bench.
The 22-year-old was particularly excellent during his displays against West Ham and Cardiff City before the international break so there was an expectation that Torreira could make his full debut against Newcastle.
However, he was forced off at half-time during Uruguay’s 4-1 win over Mexico at the weekend and was spotted with an ice pack on his calf while sitting on the bench during the second half.
TeamTalk are citing a report from the Sun that claims Arsenal officials were surprised Torreira started for his country as they weren’t convinced he was fit enough to do so as he’s still working his way back to full fitness having arrived back late to pre-season following his exploits at the World Cup.
Torriera is set to head back to north London to be assessed by Arsenal’s medical department but the newspaper says the midfielder is expected to miss the trip to St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
I’ll be hugely disappointed if Torreira misses out against Newcastle as he deserves to make his full debut and I think we badly need him as we still don’t have enough protection in front of the back four.
However, thankfully the injury isn’t serious and the report suggests that Torreira could be back in contention to start against Vorskla in our Europa League group stage opener next Thursday.
If Torreira does miss the trip to Newcastle, then youngster Matteo Guendouzi is likely to keep his place alongside Granit Xhaka in midfield after an impressive start to life in the Premier League following his summer move from Lorient.
