[Photos] Mesut Ozil all smiles as Arsenal train in Singapore ahead of Atletico game
Mesut Ozil trained with the Arsenal squad in Singapore and seemed in good spirits despite the furore following his decision to retire from international football.
Ozil announced his retirement in a long statement on Sunday afternoon and took aim at the Germany directors for his treatment following his pre-World Cup photo with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness then launched an astonishing attack on Ozil claiming the Arsenal playmaker has been ‘shit for years’ and shouldn’t have played for Germany at the World Cup.
However, Ozil has put the row to one side and got back to football as he stepped-up his pre-season preparations in the Far East ahead of Arsenal’s friendly with Atletico Madrid.
We touched down in Singapore on Sunday to take part in the International Champions Cup where we’ll take on Atletico on Thursday before facing French giants Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.
The squad have already enjoyed some pre-season run outs against the likes of Boreham Wood and Brentford but Atletico and PSG will obviously provide Unai Emery’s men with much stiffer tests.
Following our exploits in Singapore, Arsenal will head back to Europe for further games against Chelsea and Lazio ahead of our Premier League opener against Manchester City on August 12th.
